Episode 1:Beginning Your Toddler Adventure

"Everything you need to raise a happy, confident, resilient toddler
undamaged by living through a pandemic!"

Show notes:

Welcome to The Sue Atkins Toddler Roadmap Podcast Series. I am going to look at lots of aspects of raising toddlers so they are not damaged by a unique time in history – living through a pandemic – and each episode will help you to nurture your child’s mental health and wellbeing too as this podcast is linked to my Positive Toddler Roadmap eCourse Training and Community.

I’m going to hold your hand, support and guide you through everything you need to know about raising happy, confident resilient kids – today’s toddlers but tomorrow’s adults!

I want you to relax & have total confidence that I’ve got your back – showing you the way to happy, confident kids and knowing the pandemic didn’t damage your toddler long term!

In this episode:

  • How to teach your toddler self-esteem, resilience, and confidence.
  • How, where and why the TODDLER Roadmap idea was born.
  • What makes a happy childhood and why it is SO important for a child.
  • We discuss the roadmap for handling your toddler’s tantrums, for helping with successful and easy potty training, for handling sibling rivalry and how to handle when they go through the ‘WHY” phase and much, much more!
  • We talk about ‘If you want a different result, stop acting the same old way!’
  • We look at why too much correction can be bad for your relationship as it is demoralising for your toddler so we look at ways to help you change from yelling, arguing, forcing, or even bribing.
  • What My Toddler Roadmap all about.

Your Vision for Your Family

I’d like you to stop and ask yourself these questions: (It’s a good idea to get some paper to jot down your thoughts as that gives you clarity and a new way of looking at things)

What would it be like if you woke up one morning and I had waved a magic wand in the night and your life had become exactly as you wanted and dreamed it to be?

Relax and breathe deeply and slowly – that’s right just relax into the fantasy and vividly imagine it.
  • How would you know that the dream had come true
  • What would you see?
  • What would you hear?
  • How would you feel deep down inside?
  • What changes would have had to occur to make this dream come true?
  • As you relax allow yourself this time and space to explore what it is you really want.
  • Let go of your sense of fear and uncertainty
  • Let go of all the judgements and harsh words you say to yourself inside your head
  • Imagine everything is all right
  • Imagine everything is going to be OK
  • How do you look?
  • How do you sound?
  • What are people saying to you that are so positive?
  • How do you feel when you are relaxed, in control and going with the flow of the situation?
  • How does it feel to know things will be fine in the future?
Imagine a situation that you would like to change or improve on – see what you see – hear what you hear and feel how you feel in this imaginary wonderful world free from reality.

What are you doing – what are you saying – how are you breathing – what is your body doing, when you are relaxed – how are you standing, feeling and what are you hearing?

What are your children doing in this perfect world – what are they doing, what are they saying, how are they feeling – what do they see?
Imagine stepping into their shoes and socks – really get inside the mind of your toddler – see the world as they see it – hear the world as they hear it – feel the world as they feel it – and imagine the world from their point of view.

And as you relax and continue to breathe deeply take the learning and discoveries from doing this exercise back with you into your present moment and life now.

Gradually become aware of yourself back in the present.

The challenge for families going through change is that they want a new instant result, but they continue to act in the same old way – and it was Einstein who said that the definition of madness was doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.
I believe the resources you need to handle your child easily are within you now.
  • During the last week, what are the things you have talked (or yelled) about with your toddler?
  • What led up to the shouting or anger – notice YOUR triggers. Were you tired, hungry, overwhelmed – was it in the same place, or on the same day each time? If there’s a pattern you can change it!
  • Think of just one or two small changes you could make this week to behave differently – in your words or actions or tone of voice and try them out and see what happens.
This is not about beating yourself up but about making some small change that will make a BIG difference over time.

The things you say and do with your children determine the kind of relationship you have with them and sometimes after some reflection and standing back the relationships with your children may need to change.
